April 2001

President's Message :

Well the St. Patty's Meeting went off well, we had a great turnout.  I would like to thank all those who made it a great meeting, I would like to thank Chief Mike Scagnelli for making the long trip from Staten Island to attend and to be our guest speaker.

I would also like to thank the people who came to answer questions about the Pistol Permit process here in Orange County.  There will be more on this in the newsletter.  Thank you to Barbara Dunn and her Husband Skeet, also congratulations on the engagement of their daughter, to donna Dixon, County Clerk, and to the Sheriff's Office ID Section, Sgt Mike Costello and Inv Paul Arteta, and Lillian McDonald from the Pistol Licensing Section of the Sheriff's Office.  Sheriff Bigger had planned on attending but called at the last second due to sickness.   They are all sympathic towards are plight in the long process and want to help us shorten the process.

As more and more of our members get ready to retire, we will be flooding the Sheriff's Office and the judges with our permit applications which will lengthen the process, so the Board is working to head off this problem, so please stay tuned to these pages for updates.

This Board is always looking for things to improve our life style here in Orange County, from discounted cell phones, from Voice Stream to discounted insurance from Liberty Mutual.  For more information on the insurance plans contact Lodge Member Eileen Scofield at Liberty Mutual in Washingtonville or e-mail her at Eileen Scofield@libertymutual.com.  We have even arranged for discounts at Straub Fitness Centers in Monroe and Newburgh, just contact the gym for a tour of their modern facilities and Joe will explain the benefits.

If any member has any ideas that would help the membership out, please let us know, and we will gladly explore getting benefits for all our members.

As we hopefully see the last of the winter snows (it is snowing as I write this) we look forward to the Spring with several classes and seminars to offer to our members and thier families.  We will host the Driver Safety Course for members and their families at $15.00 per person with VIN etching also being done for addition insurance discounts.  We will also be hosting a Firearms Refresher Course for the retired Law Enforcement officers of Orange County, see inside the nesletter for more.

Lastly, remember, stay safe and to wear your vests.

Pistol Permits;

We have arranged with the Sheriff's Office to make the application process easier for members trying to get a pistol permit.  At the April 9 meeting Sgt Costello and Inv. Arteta will return to start the process, we will supply the applications and the print cards, the Sgt and Investagator will fingerprint any member who wants to apply, this will save a trip to Goshen and avoid scheduling problems, such as child care or taking a day off from work.  If you want to apply for a permit you will need to bring two (2) POST OFFICE MONEY ORDERS. One money order made out to N.Y.S.D.C.J.S. for $74.00 and the other money order made out to Orange County Clerk for $10.00.  These must be for the correct amount and must be Post Office Money Orders.

Firearms Refresher Course:

This course is for members and non members who are retired Law Enforcement.  We have opened this to Rockland  County retirees also.  It will be held at Masterclass Shooters Supplies, Dennis Serpi has graciously donated the Range to our Lodge for this worthy effort. It will be held on Saturday April 21 starting at 10:00.  All who attend will be required to attend a quick safety lecture, then your firearms will be inspected and any repairs will be made by a professional gunsmith.  While on the firing line we will be having a one on one ratio between shooter and Firearms Instructor.  We have several full time professional Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors who have donated their time to assist us.  We ask that all retirees limit the amount of firearms they will bring, preferably the ones that they carry, and we would like to keep it to .38's .9mm and .380's.  We are working on replacing the ammo with fresh ammo, so if you have any ammo you want to shoot, please bring it.  We will reload you with fresh street ammo, to replace the 20 year old stuff.  The cost of the range usage and instruction is free.  You may have to purchase some ammo from the Range for the practice course.

If you are interested in attending please call Tom Carton at 845-782-9497.

April Meeting

The guest speakers for the April Meeting will be John Snydervich and Tony Senftt of the Police Self Support Group. Both men were almost killed in the Line Of Duty and fought back from their injuries and now make themselves available to cops who are seriously hurt in the Line of Duty.  Their stories are very riviting and moving.

Congratulations

Congratulations to John Krol on his retirement from the NYPD

PARDON GATE HITS POLICE HARD

Not many people know that during "Pardon Gate" former President Bill Clinton
gave a last minute clemency to Susan Ronsenberg, a former member of a
terrorist group which played a role in a murderous 1981 armed robbery in New
York.

Two police officers, Sgt. Edward O'Grady and Officer Waverly Brown were
killed during the crime. Rosenberg was accused of planning the robbery and
driving a get away car. She also helped engineer the 1979 escape of convicted
cop killer Joanne Chesimard, from a New Jersey Prison. Rosenberg escaped
arrest in 1979 but was captured by police three years later as she was
unloading 780lbs of dynamite, and submachine guns from a truck in Cherry
Hill, NJ. She was convicted and sentenced to 58 years in prison. Bill Clinton
set her free in January 2001.

Guilty of assisting Bill Clinton in this slap in the face to America's finest
is Rep. Jerrold Nadler, (D-NY). He took the initiative in pressing Clinton to
pardon this terrorist.

Every police union in America, especially the NYCPBA should not forget what
Clinton and Nadler did. Come election day, they will look for the photo ops
and endorsements. It is about time the police and the people respond by
throwing them out of office.
